Welcome to Pacific Northwest Tropics

Pacific Northwest Tropics is an independent resource dedicated to growing tropical and subtropical plants in the real climate conditions of Western Washington.

Founded and maintained by Jeff in Rochester, Washington, this project was built from more than five years of hands-on experience growing cold-hardy palm trees, banana plants, New Zealand flax, and other bold foliage plants outdoors through Pacific Northwest winters — including snow events and extended freeze periods.

The focus here is simple: understand which tropical-style plants truly tolerate cold, wet winters and how to help them establish long-term in temperate conditions.

Growing Tropical Plants in Real PNW Conditions

The Pacific Northwest presents unique challenges:

  • Heavy winter rainfall

  • Freezing rain and occasional snow

  • Temperature swings

  • Wind exposure

  • Short winter daylight hours

Not every plant marketed as “cold-hardy” performs reliably under these conditions.

This site documents what survives, what struggles, and what thrives after multiple seasons outdoors.

You’ll find practical guidance on:

  • Selecting cold-hardy palm species

  • Growing banana plants in temperate climates

  • Designing tropical-style landscapes that remain structurally interesting year-round

  • Protecting plants during freeze events

  • Understanding drainage, microclimates, and wind exposure

All advice is written specifically for Pacific Northwest gardeners — not warm-climate regions.

Seasonal Plant Availability

In addition to educational content, Pacific Northwest Tropics offers limited seasonal plant availability when inventory allows. Plants such as Windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) and cold-hardy banana plants are grown and evaluated outdoors in Western Washington conditions.

Availability follows natural growth cycles and is not year-round retail inventory. The emphasis remains on responsible cultivation and gradual expansion rather than mass production.

Local pickup is available in Rochester, Washington when plants are in season.

Experience-Based, Not Generic

This site reflects real-world experimentation.

Over multiple growing seasons, plants have been observed through:

  • Freeze events

  • Snow accumulation

  • Saturated winter soils

  • Summer drought stress

Photography on this site represents real plantings in temperate conditions, not greenhouse specimens or stock imagery.

Content is updated as plants mature and performance changes over time.
